How It All Started

Alvin Sommers Masonry, now known as A.S.M. Construction Inc, dates all the way back to 1960 when Alvin Sommers started his masonry business. That was long before powered saws, mixers, and concrete pumps were around, and work was done the hard way by hand. Alvin perfected the skill of masonry while laying the blocks for many of the early homes in Sarasota County. After his two sons, Vernon and Gaylin, were old enough to work in the family business, Alvin changed the name to Alvin Sommers and Sons Masonry. In 1980, the company was incorporated under the name Alvin Sommers Masonry Inc., and in 1997, Vernon Sommers was brought in as a partner with his dad. After the passing of Alvin in the fall of 2003, Vernon continued on with the family business, building onto the reputation and quality his father had rooted into the company name. It was the hard work ethic, faith, and strong Christian beliefs that pulled Vernon, his wife Connie, and the business through the Great Recession of 2008, making Alvin Sommers Masonry Inc. one of the few masonry companies to survive. In late 2015, Dillon Miller was brought on board as a Project Manager, learning and perfecting the trade of quality block construction from Vernon. Dillon was introduced early in life to what it took to become a block layer, going with his dad to work during the summer months starting at age 12. In the summer of 2023, Dillon bought the business from Vernon and Connie and brought Brian Miller on as a partner. Today, as the company continues to grow, our mission is to maintain the reputation of quality and craftsmanship that Alvin Sommers established and to serve our builders and homeowners with integrity.
